1817 -1878 · Barbizon, outdoor painting and rivers
Born in Paris in 1817 into a family of artists, Charles-François Daubigny learned painting and engraving very early. After a trip to Italy, he frequented the studio of Paul Delaroche and became closer to the landscapers of Barbizon, notably Camille Corot. In 1857, he converted a boat, Le Botin, into a floating workshop: from the Seine and the Oise, he could directly observe the banks, reflections and variations of the sky. He bought land in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1860 and had his house-workshop built there the following year. His landscapes, based on a free touch and an atmospheric tone, broke with the ideal composition in favor of the immediate experience of nature. Member of jury of the Salon, Daubigny supports several young artists, including Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Degas, Sisley and Morisot, who will recognize in him a precursor of their own research. The "Charles-François Daubigny" selection notably compares Les Bords de l'Oise and La Seine: Matin. His reading favors the material.
Daubigny paints the river as a living space: the water, the sky and the banks change together, under the effect of an always passing light.
