Commissioned for Arthur Balfour's London home, the Perseus cycle occupied Burne-Jones for more than a decade. The artist imagines a series of paintings and panels which takes the hero from the imposed mission to the deliverance of Andromeda. He studies armor, monsters, rocks and figures in numerous drawings, gouaches and cartoons. The episodes do not seek exact archeology: they transform the ancient story into an interior drama. Medusa becomes a fascinating presence, the Graea embody torn knowledge, Atlas petrifies in a mineral landscape, and the fulfillment of destiny brings together violence and suspended beauty.
