Piet Mondrian is mainly associated with black lines and primary colors, but his research is first built in the Dutch landscape. Around Amsterdam, Duivendrecht and Achterhoek, he drew and painted farms, mills, rivers, trees and rural interiors. The Weltevreden farm near Duivendrecht particularly caught his attention between 1905 and 1918. Mondrian took it up from several angles, on a clear day or in the evening, in oil, gouache, pastel and drawing. The repetition does not aim at a simple copy of the site. The roof, walls, trunks and their reflection become vertical and horizontal relationships; natural colors tighten or intensify according to light. As the painter encounters luminism and then cubism, the farm remains a recognizable anchor point within a more synthetic structure.
