Frederick Childe Hassam was born in Dorchester, near Boston, in 1859 and died in East Hampton in 1935. First trained as an engraver and illustrator, he practiced watercolor before staying in Paris from 1886 to 1889 and taking courses in the Julian Academy. There he observed French impressionism, its contemporary subjects, its framing and its light palette without renouncing a solidly constructed composition.
