Born in Haarlem in 1562, Cornelis Cornelisz was entrusted to the painter Pieter Pietersz when his parents left the city during the Spanish siege. After this initial training, he traveled to France in 1579, passed briefly through Antwerp and returned to Haarlem around 1580 -1581. His meeting with Hendrick Goltzius and Karel van Mander was decisive: around 1586, the three artists constituted a community of study often called the Haarlem Academy.
