Born in Ferrara before 1431, Cosimo Tura, also called Cosmè Tura, became the first grand master of the Ferrara school. His training is not known with certainty, but his style brings together international Gothic, the sculptural rigor of Padua, the example of Mantegna, certain research by Piero della Francesca and the oil technique of northern painters. In the service of the Estes, first under Borso then under Ercole I, he acted as court painter, decorator and designer for residences, festivals and dynastic objects.
