Cosmè Tura, another form called Cosimo Tura, was born in Ferrara before 1431 and became the founding painter of the Ferrara Renaissance. In the service of the Dukes of Este, he did not limit himself to easel paintings: he designed decorative cycles, altarpieces, cartoons, court objects and images intended to affirm the humanist culture of the dynasty. His art combines the tradition of international Gothic, sculptural construction associated with Mantegna and Padua, as well as an early knowledge of Nordic oil painting. In the saints, Virgins and episodes of the Passion, incisive contours, metallic folds and rocky bottoms transform devotion into intense experience. Several groups were dispersed, so much so that panels now separated find their unity through the continuity of the landscape or the iconographic program. Until his death in 1495, Tura developed a style in Ferrara which marked Francesco del Cossa and Ercole de' Roberti.
