Marie-Françoise-Constance Mayer La Martinière was born in Chauny in 1774. Encouraged by her father, she studied with Joseph-Benoît Suvée and Jean-Baptiste Greuze, then exhibited regularly at the Salon from the revolutionary years. Her first works prove an ambition that goes beyond the genres then reserved for women artists: portrait, moral history and large allegorical compositions. Her meeting with Pierre-Paul Prud'hon opens up a decisive artistic collaboration and personal relationship. Mayer painted several compositions prepared by drawings by Prud'hon, while developing his own portraits and maternity images. This proximity has long led the absorption of his work in that of the painter. The Dream of Happiness, presented at the Salon of 1819 under the name of Mademoiselle Mayer and acquired by Louis XVIII, nevertheless constitutes a major public affirmation.
