1577 -1621 · Reformation of Florentine painting
Born in Florence in 1577, Cristofano Allori grew up in the studio of his father Alessandro Allori, direct heir to Bronzino's mannerism. However, he moved away from this linear academicism to join the reforming circle of Gregorio Pagani and Cigoli, seeking more natural light, more readable feelings and a more flexible model. Portraits, altarpieces and biblical scenes show an extremely polite technique, attentive to skin, velvet, satin and jewelry. His most famous work, Judith with the head of Holofernes, painted around 1610 -1613 and quickly copied, combines ideal beauty and contained violence. Tradition recognizes his former mistress Mazzafirra in Judith and the Artist Himself in Holofernes' Head, transforming the biblical story into personal drama. Allori thus participated in the transition from late mannerism to a more naturalistic and theatrical Florentine painting. He died in Florence in 1621. The "Cristofano Allori" selection notably compared Judith with Holofernes' head. His reading favors movement.
Allori contrasts horror to perfection: luminous skin, precious brocade and a confident look are enough to make the drama more intense.
