Lombardy, 1598 -1630 · Classical discipline and spiritual intensity
Daniele Crespi was born in Busto Arsizio around 1598 and died in Milan in 1630, swept away by the plague. Trained in Milanese circles, he looked at Cerano and especially Giulio Cesare Procaccini, but quickly moved away from Lombard mannerism to develop a more direct language. His compositions bring together classical anatomy, powerful chiaroscuro and disciplined emotion. The Flagellation, around 1625, shows the moment preceding the torture: Christ's hands are tied behind his back, leaving his body isolated and perfectly constructed. This version is the most serene of his interpretations of the theme and abandons a large part of the Caravaggio effect of his previous essays. The Pietà, signed and dated 1626, on the contrary, tightens the lifeless body in the arms of the Virgin, under the gaze of a crying angel. The reduced palette and the rectangular light which strikes Christ give the image its tragic stability. Both works show how Crespi obtains intensity not through excess, but through concentration. The "Daniele Crespi" selection notably compares Flogging and Pietà. His reading favors figures.
Crespi removes almost anything that could distract: there remains the body, the light and the exact gravity of the gesture.
