Born in Antwerp in 1590, Daniel Seghers stayed in the United Provinces before returning to his hometown and training with Jan Brueghel the Elder. Received master at the guild of Saint Luke in 1611, he then entered the Society of Jesus as a lay brother and took his vows in 1625. After a stay in Rome, he worked mainly in Antwerp. Seghers specialized in garlands and flower festoons which surround a religious image, a portrait or a cartouche painted by another artist. He collaborates in particular with Cornelis Schut, Erasmus Quellinus II and Abraham van Diepenbeeck. Transparency of petals, light and botanical variety give its flowers value at the same time natural and symbolic.
