1857 -1913 · Spanish impressionism and Atlantic light
Born in Ribadesella in Asturias in 1857, Darío de Regoyos began his training in Madrid before leaving for Brussels in 1879. In the workshop of Joseph Quinaux and in contact with Théo van Rysselberghe, James Ensor and the circle of XX, he discovered the most advanced European research. He exhibited with L'Essor then Les XX and experienced personal divisionism, without abandoning a quick impressionist touch. His travels with the writer Émile Verhaeren across Spain gave birth to black Spain, a critical vision of the rites, poverty and contrasts of the country. Frequently installed in the Basque Country, he painted rain, snow, dawn, ports, trains and blast furnaces with bold attention to atmospheric effects. His landscapes sometimes contrast luminous nature and industrial transformation. Considered the main Spanish representative of impressionism, Regoyos pursued an independent career until his death in Barcelona in 1913. The "Darío de Regoyos" selection notably compared Landscape of Hernani and Snowy Landscape at Night, Haarlem. His reading favors composition.
Regoyos paints the air before the pattern: rain, snow, smoke and colorful light transform the landscape into an immediate experience.
