David Teniers the Younger was born in Antwerp in 1610 into a dynasty of artists. Trained by his father and marked by Adriaen Brouwer, he transformed the peasant scene into a refined painting intended for great European collectors. His inns, surgeons, alchemists and festivals combine precise observation, humor and clear light. He also developed the aping, a satirical genre where monkeys imitate soldiers, painters, sculptors or drinkers and return human ambitions to their comic dimension. Thanks to his marriage to Anna Brueghel then to his links with Rubens, the King of Spain, the Prince of Orange and Archduke Leopold-Guillaume, Teniers reached the highest circles. HAS Brussels, he became court painter and guardian of the archducal gallery, which he represented in famous interiors filled with paintings. The Theatrum Pictorium diffused through engraving the Italian masterpieces of this collection. Owner of Drij Toren's estate and knighted in 1680, he died in 1690 after an exceptionally productive career.
