1576 - around 1632 · Narrative landscape and Dutch festival
Born in Mechelen in 1576 into a family of painters, David Vinckboons left the southern Netherlands with his family and settled in Amsterdam around 1591. Trained by his father Philip, he preserved the legacy of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Gillis van Coninxloo while adapting the Flemish landscape to the new Dutch market. Its woods, villages, gardens and paths are never simple settings: farmers, hunters, soldiers, animals or elegant companies construct multiple little stories there. Vinckboons plays an essential role in the development of the village festival, the garden scene and the lively forest landscape at the beginning of the 17th century. Inventive designer, he also prepares compositions intended for engraving, which widely diffuses his figures and types. His influence affected Esaias van de Velde, Hendrick Avercamp and several generations of landscapers. He probably died in Amsterdam around 1632.
