Giovanni Battista Gaulli, nicknamed Baciccio, was born in Genoa in 1639 and arrived in Rome around the age of eighteen. His talent was quickly noticed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, whose influence transformed his career and his conception of religious spectacle. Gaulli became a sought-after portraitist of popes, cardinals and great families: he invited his models to speak and move in order to capture a more natural presence than the official pose. His fame also rests on the vast decorations of the Gesù church. In The Triumph of the Name of Jesus, painted between 1672 and 1679, painted figures, gilded stuccoes and real architecture merge; the blessed rise towards the light while the vices seem to fall outside the box. This fusion of the arts extends Bernini's conceptions and makes the vault an open celestial space. Gaulli also produced altarpieces, Pietà, biblical scenes and numerous preparatory drawings. Member then prince of the Accademia di San Luca, he remained active in Rome until his death in 1709.
