Concentrated portraits, restless self-portraits, southern landscapes and constructed still lifes give Dezs· Czigány a unique place in the Hungarian avant-garde.

Born in Budapest in 1883, Dezs· Czigâny trained in Munich, with Simon Hollósy in Nagybanya, then in Paris where he directly discovered the research of Cézanne, Gauguin and des Fauves. Back in Hungary, he studied with Károly Ferenczy and became one of the founders of the Eight, a decisive group for the introduction of Fauvism, Cubism and Expressionism into Hungarian painting. His friendship with the poet Endre Ady nourished a series of portraits of great psychological density.
