1886 -1957 · Cubism, Mexican muralism and social history
Born in Guanajuato in 1886, Diego Rivera entered the Academy of San Carlos de Mexico at a very young age before continuing his training in Europe from 1907. In Paris, he frequented the avant-garde and developed a personal cubism where objects, portraits and landscapes fragment without losing their Mexican identity. Returning to Mexico in 1921, he participated with José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros in the rise of muralism. The fresco allowed him to directly address a vast audience: indigenous history, conquest, revolution, industrial work and popular life were organized into readable, powerful and political cycles. His ensembles of the Secretaria of Educacion Püblica, Chapingo, Palacio Nacional and the Detroit Institute of Arts give the wall a dimension that is both civic and epic. Rivera also painted portraits, still lifes, landscapes and preparatory studies, often with firm volumes and a bold color. His commissions in the United States and the controversial episode at Rockefeller Center confirm his international fame. He died in Mexico in 1957. The "Diego Rivera" selection notably compared Portrait of Ramón Gomez de la Serna and N° 9, Spanish Still Life. His reading favors space.
Rivera transforms painting into shared history: the body, the tool and the architecture become the actors of a collective memory.
