Born in Seville in 1599, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez entered the studio of Francisco Pacheco at a very young age, whose daughter he later married. His first cooking and tavern scenes combined realistic observation, directed light and attention to ordinary objects. In 1623, he moved to Madrid and became a painter to King Philip IV. The court offered him privileged access to royal collections, notably Titian, while two trips to Italy deepened his understanding of color, nude, portrait and space. Velazquez painted the royal family, jesters, dignitaries and visitors with the same attention to individual presence. His touch becomes progressively freer: up close, it appears fragmented; from a distance, she recomposes fabrics, skin tones, air and light. The Meninas summarize this research by bringing together portrait, self-portrait, reflection and representation in a space whose reality the spectator seems to share.
