Around 1410 -1475 · Louvain and painting of the Flemish Primitives
Probably born in the 1410s, Dieric Bouts was documented in Louvain from 1448 and remained there until his death in 1475. In a then booming town, he ran an important workshop and became painter of the town in 1472. His large altarpieces, including The Last Supper and The Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus, combine realism of objects, constructed perspective and deliberately contained emotion. Bouts places religious stories in credible interiors and landscapes in order to bring the sacred event closer to the spectator. Portraits, Virgins and small devotional panels extend this language of silence and precision. His sons Dieric the Younger and Albrecht continue the tradition of the workshop. There selection "Dieric Bouts" notably compares A donor presented by a saint and Virgin of sorrow and Christ crowned with thorns. His reading favors figures.
Bouts retains the gesture to deepen the presence: the quieter the figures, the more the space seems charged with meaning.
