Dirk - or Dieric - Bouts was probably born in the Northern Netherlands around 1410, but his documented career took place mainly in Louvain, where his name appeared in the archives from 1448. The art of Rogier van der Weyden marked his training: elongated figures, collected faces and devotional narration. Bouts, however, develops his own, less demonstrative sensitivity, based on silence, distance and the rational organization of space. In The Last Supper of the Saint-Pierre collegiate church, commissioned in 1464, architecture subjects the scene to a coherent perspective while the gestures retained give the meal a contemplative intensity.
