Trained with Denis Calvaert then Ludovico Carracci, he joined Rome around 1602 and worked in Annibale Carracci's entourage at the Farnese Palace. His first commissions reveal an ideal based on Raphael, Antiquity and the Bolognese reform: emotions must be understandable, gestures precise and composition clear.
