1591/1592 -1623 · Baroque between Rome, Mantua and Venice
Born in Rome around 1591 or 1592, Domenico Fetti probably trained with Ludovico Cigoli in an environment where Caravaggesque naturalism, Raphael's heritage and Tuscan painting intersect. In 1613, he became court painter to Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga in Mantua. He worked there for palaces, churches and the ducal collection while discovering the works of Rubens, the Venetians and the Bassano family. Fetti particularly renewed the painting of parables: small nervous paintings condensed a biblical lesson in landscapes, taverns, paths or interiors populated by ordinary people. Fetti particularly renews the painting of parables: small nervous paintings condense a biblical lesson in landscapes, taverns, paths or interiors populated by ordinary people. Its free touch, bright accents and warm colors give these stories an immediate presence. He also painted portraits, allegorical figures and devotional subjects. After a conflict in Mantua, he moved to Venice around 1622, where his manner became even more colorful and fluid. He died in 1623, at the end of a very short but decisive career for baroque painting in northern Italy. The "Domenico Fetti" selection notably compared The Parable of the Straw and the Beam and The Good Samaritan. His reading favors color.
Fetti tells the parable like a surprise scene in real life: a ray of light is enough to shift everyday life towards the spiritual meaning.
