Born in Naples in 1823, Domenico Morelli studied at the city's Royal Institute of Fine Arts. Very early on, he refused the cold academic reconstruction to seek a more emotional history painting, nourished by theater, literature and observation. His commitment to the events of 1848 placed him in the Risorgimento generation. Stays in Rome, Florence and northern Italy broadened his visual culture, while his dialogue with Filippo Palizzi encouraged a freer color and a new attention to light. Morelli renewed biblical subjects by situating them in an Orient imagined but documented by travel, costumes and research archaeological. His religious paintings favor the human intensity of gesture and gaze rather than convention. Professor then director of the Academy of Naples, he exerted a profound influence on several generations of artists and participated in the transformation of Italian education. Died in Naples in 1901, he left paintings, drawings, studies and large decorations, the total number of which remains estimated.
