1541 -1614 · Crete, Venice, Rome and Spanish mannerism
Domenikos Theotokopoulos was born in 1541 in Candia, Crete, then a Venetian possession. Trained as an icon painter in the Byzantine tradition, he left for Venice around 1567 and assimilated the color of Titian, the shortcuts of Tintoretto and the material of the Bassano. In Rome, from 1570, he studied Michelangelo, Raphael and Mannerist architecture while defending a very personal conception of painting. Installed in Spain in 1577, he first received commissions in Madrid and the Escorial, then settled permanently in Toledo. Altarpieces, portraits, city views and series of apostles developed a unique language: stretched silhouettes, compressed spaces, colored flames and light without natural source. The Burial of Count Orgaz unites the terrestrial world and celestial apparition in a composition that has become emblematic. El Greco runs a workshop with his son Jorge Manuel and takes up several compositions in variations. Died in Toledo in 1614, he was rediscovered in the 19th and 20th centuries as a precursor of modernity. The selection "Domenikos Theotokopoulos - El Greco" notably compares Farewell of Jesus to Mary and Adoration of the Shepherds. His reading favors composition.
El Greco does not distort the visible: he stretches it until the inner impulse, prayer and spiritual light are perceptible.
