Giovanni di Niccolo de Luteri, known as Dosso Dossi, was probably born around 1486 in the territory of Ferrara. Documented from 1512, he became with his brother Battista one of the main court painters of Alfonso I d'Este. Ferrara was then a home where poetry, theater, music and visual arts responded to each other; Ariosto's Orlando furioso provides an essential cultural horizon. For the Duke's Camerino d'Alabastro, he painted episodes of the Aeneid and collaborated on a prestigious ensemble which also included Bellini and Titian. Dosso also creates portraits, altarpieces and ephemeral decorations, sometimes with Battista. His soft touch, his deep greens and his bursts of red give nature an almost magical power. He died in Ferrara in 1542. The "Dosso Dossi" selection notably compares Allegory of Fortune and Circe and her lovers in a landscape. His reading favors the story.
Dosso Dossi transforms allegory into enchantment: color first attracts, then the landscape, the gesture and the object open a story that never completely closes.
