Edward John Poynter was born in Paris in 1836 into a British family linked to the arts. He trained in London, Rome then Paris in the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he acquired a demanding drawing and a monumental method of composition. Back in Great Britain, he established himself with biblical and ancient subjects nourished by archaeological research. Israel in Egypt, Faithful to the death, The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon and the mythological scenes combine reconstructed architecture, disciplined bodies and narrative tension. Poynter also works on the large decor: mosaics, murals and cartoons intended for the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Palace of Westminster. An influential professor and administrator, he directed the Slade School of Fine Art, the National Art Training School and the National Gallery. Elected president of the Royal Academy in 1896, he defended the primacy of academic drawing at a time when British art was transforming. Anobled, he continued portraits, mythologies and watercolors until his death in 1919. The "Edward Poynter" selection notably compared Israel in Egypt and Faithful to Death.
