Born in Toulouse in 1847, Édouard-Bernard Debat-Ponsan entered the Paris School of Fine Arts in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel. He started at the Salon in 1870 and won the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1873. His academic profession allowed him to approach very different genres: history, social portrait, rural scene, monumental decor and orientalism. Massage, a hammam scene, presented in 1883, combines nude precision, clear light and contemporary taste for the Orient. His commitment became explicit during the Dreyfus affair: The Truth emerging from the well constitutes a visual intervention in favor of revising the trial. The artist participated in the large sets of the Capitol in Toulouse and illustrated Zola. Died in Paris in 1913, he left paintings, sketches and drawings whose diversity reflected the tensions of the Third Republic.
