1868 -1940 · Nabis, intimacy and large modern settings
Édouard Vuillard was born in Cuiseaux in 1868 and grew up in Paris. After the Académie Julian, in 1889 he joined the Nabis group around Sérusier, Bonnard, Denis and Ranson. Influenced by Gauguin, Japanese prints and symbolism, he simplified shapes, flattened space and willingly confused figures, clothes and wallpapers. His mother's sewing workshop became a visual laboratory where gestures, motifs and silences composed small domestic dramas. Co-founder of the Théâtre de l'Œuvre, Vuillard also designed programs and sets. Co-founder of the Théâtre de l'Œuvre, Vuillard also designed programs and sets. In the 1890s, his interiors reached radical intensity; he then developed large decorative panels for his friends and collectors, notably the Natansons. After 1900, his language became more luminous and descriptive without abandoning attention to human relationships. Portraits, gardens, photographs and vast decorations mark a career that extended until his death in 1940. Vuillard's corpus, particularly abundant, includes paintings, drawings, pastels, prints, photographs and decorative projects. The "Édouard Vuillard" selection notably compares Madame Vuillard's sewing workshop and Two seamstresses under the lamp. His reading favors movement.
Vuillard does not only paint a room: he paints the way in which beings, motifs and memories mingle until they become inseparable.
