Edward Wilkins Waite was born in Leatherhead, Surrey, in 1854, into a family of artists. Trained by his father, the painter John White Waite, he devoted most of his career to the British landscape. He worked in Surrey, Berkshire, Sussex and around Brockham, Mitcham or Newbury, choosing modest sites rather than spectacular panoramas. Roads under trees, riversides, gardens, fields and edges allowed him to study seasonal changes. Waite exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from the 1870s as well as at the Royal Society of British Artists, of which he became a member. His touch remains precise but softened by variations in light and atmosphere. Died in 1924, he left a scattered corpus of painted landscapes, watercolors and studies. The "Edward Wilkins Waite" selection notably compares Autumn Coloring and The Rising Moon. His reading favors figures.
Waite makes the change of season a silent event: a leaf, a reflection or a path are enough to give the landscape the depth of time.
