1849 -1903 · American travel, Indian architecture and documented orientalism
Edwin Lord Weeks was born in Boston in 1849 into a wealthy family which allowed him to travel at a very young age. He studied with Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris, acquiring a precise drawing and an academic style. After stays in Morocco and Spain, Weeks undertook long trips to India in the 1880s and 1890s. He observed Delhi, Agra, Mathura, Benares, Lahore and Rajasthan, taking photographs, drawings and studies of costumes, animals and architecture. His paintings combine careful documentation with spectacular composition: royal elephants, processions, merchants, mosques and ghats become actors in a city animated by light. The Rajah leaves for the hunting or Prayer Time at the Pearl Mosque show his taste for architectural depth and orderly crowds. Weeks also published illustrated travel stories and exhibited widely in Europe and the United States. Installed in Paris, he died in 1903, leaving paintings, watercolors, drawings, photographs and publications. The "Edwin Lord Weeks" selection notably compares The Old Mosque with Blue Tiles outside Delhi and The Hour of Prayer at the Pearl Mosque, Agra. His reading favors space.
Weeks builds the stage from the journey: architecture, light, animal and crowd retain the precision of the notebook while gaining theatrical breadth.
