Egbert van der Poel was born in Delft in 1621 and became a member of the guild of Saint-Luc in 1650. He painted the interiors of barns, kitchens, farms and courtyards where peasants, animals, tools and provisions were described with concrete attention. His career was deeply marked by the explosion of the Delft powder magazine on October 12, 1654, a disaster which destroyed part of the city and notably killed Carel Fabritius.
