Egon Schiele was born in Tulln in 1890 and entered the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1906. He quickly moved away from conservative teaching and founded the Neukunstgruppe in 1909. Gustav Klimt's support and example helped him construct a personal language: incisive contours, isolated silhouettes, tense poses and large spaces left bare. Self-portraits, nudes, couples, landscapes and cities become places of direct questioning about identity, desire, solitude and death. His relationship with Walburga "Wally" Neuzil nourished several major portraits, while the war years led to more monumental compositions such as The Family. In 1918, his success the Viennese Secession heralded international recognition, but the Spanish flu won at twenty-eight, three days after his wife Edith. Despite a career of barely ten years, Schiele left a considerable collection of paintings and especially drawings which left a lasting mark on expressionism.
