Elias Gottlob Haussmann was born in Gera in 1695 and probably trained with his father, the court painter Elias Haußmann. Active as a portrait painter in Saxony, he became court painter in Dresden then official portraitist of the city of Leipzig. His clientele brings together magistrates, ecclesiastics, academics, merchants and musicians, represented according to the codes of public portraiture: frontal pose, wig, dark clothing and attribute of function. His current fame is based above all on the two portraits painted from nature by Johann Sebastian Bach, dated 1746 and 1748. The composer holds a sheet bearing an enigmatic canon, a visual sign of his contrapuntal knowledge. There version from 1748, returned to Leipzig and kept at the Bach Archiv, maintains an exceptional link with the musician's appearance. Haussmann died in Leipzig in 1774. His work, partly dispersed or known through copies, precisely documented the city's elites in the Age of Enlightenment.
