Elias van den Broeck was born in Antwerp in 1649. He trained in Amsterdam with the flower painter Cornelis Kick, then worked in Antwerp with Jan Davidsz de Heem, whose art of lush still life influenced his composition and its light. Received a master at the guild of Saint Luke of Antwerp in 1673, he then returned to Amsterdam, where he pursued a career devoted to flowers, fruits and undergrowth. Van den Broeck carefully observed plant species, insects, reptiles and shells, but brought them together according to an ideal pictorial season rather than in a simple scientific inventory.
