Born in New York in 1836, Elihu Vedder trained in the United States then left for Europe, where Florence and Rome became the lasting centers of his career. He first shared the bohemian circles of the Civil War in New York, before settling permanently in Italy in 1866. Painter, designer, muralist and decorator, he built a visionary universe nourished by Antiquity, literature and Italian landscapes. His illustrated edition of Omar Khayyâm's Rubáiyát, published in 1884 with fifty-five drawings, met with immense success.
