1882 -1939 · Australian landscape, outdoors and morning light
Elioth Gruner was born in Gisborne, New Zealand, in 1882 and grew up in Sydney from early childhood. Encouraged by his mother, he took classes with the painter Julian Ashton at a very young age while working as an employee to help his family. He exhibited with the Society of Artists from 1901 and left the business in 1912 to devote himself entirely to art. Attracted by outdoor painting, he worked on the beaches and around Sydney Harbor, then discovered the agricultural lands of Emu Plains in 1915. He rose there before dawn to study dew, frost, mist and long morning shadows. Morning light won the Wynne Prize in 1916 and Spring Jelly, his most famous painting, received the same distinction in 1919. His impressionism remained solidly constructed: small luminous touches in the foreground, light volumes, herds and trees organized a calm depth. In the 1920s and 1930s, his travels in Europe and different regions of Australia broadened his palette and his manner. Died in Sydney in 1939, Gruner left a work devoted to variations of light in the territory. Died in Sydney in 1939, Gruner left a work devoted to variations of light in the territory. Gruner paints a place less than an hour: frost, shade and the rising sun make the landscape sensitive down to its temperature.
