Born in Alkmaar around 1617, Emanuel de Witte became a member of the city's painters' guild in 1636. After Rotterdam, he worked in Delft in the 1640s, first as a figure painter, then specialized around 1650 in church interiors under the influence of Delft's perspective research. Installed mainly in Amsterdam from 1652, he represented the Oude Kerk, the Nieuwe Kerk and the Portuguese synagogue, but also domestic interiors, markets and some portraits. De Witte does not always faithfully copy the building: he moves columns, openings and furniture in order to organize a more convincing feeling of light and space. The little ones figures, dogs and gravediggers place this monumental architecture in ordinary life. The "Emanuel de Witte" selection notably compares Interior of the Oude Kerk, Delft. His reading favors figures.
De Witte paints less the exact plan of a church than the feeling of entering it: light builds space before architecture.
