Emil Filla adapts Cubism to Czech history: still lifes, mythological figures and battles unite plastic construction, art theory and resistance to the violence of the century.
Born in Chropynowski in Moravia in 1882, Emil Filla studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague but quickly sought a more modern path. Edvard Munch's exhibition in Prague in 1905 played a decisive role, then the Osma groups and the Group of Visual Artists made him one of the organizers of Czech modernism. Through contact with Picasso and Braque, Filla developed a personal, analytical then synthetic cubism, particularly fruitful in still life. During the First World War, he lived in the Netherlands and participated in the Czechoslovak resistance in exile.
