Émile Bernard was born in Lille in 1868 and studied in Paris in the studio of Fernand Cormon, where he met Toulouse-Lautrec and Louis Anquetin. After pointillist essays, he developed partitionism with Anquetin: simplified shapes, dark and flat colored contours inspired by Japanese prints and stained glass. His stays at Pont-Aven in 1888 brought him closer to Paul Gauguin. Their exchanges contributed to synthetism, which refused the naturalist illusion to unite memory, sensation and idea. Breton women, crucifixions, bathers and self-portraits then took on a decorative and symbolic force. Bernard also maintained an important correspondence with Vincent van Gogh. From 1893, he traveled to Italy, the Middle East and Egypt, where he remained for several years. Gradually critical of the avant-gardes, he returned to a more constructed painting, nourished by Renaissance and classicism. Returning to France in 1904, he painted portraits, nudes, religious subjects and major decorative cycles, while publishing poems, reviews and memories. Died in Paris in 1941, Bernard left an abundant body of work, crossed by the conflict between modern invention and tradition.
