1849 -1924 · Belgian lighting and landscapes of the Lys
Born in Vive-Saint-Éloi in 1849, Émile Claus began his training at the age of twenty at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. After realistic beginnings and a trip to Spain, Morocco and Algeria, he settled in Astene, on the banks of the Lys, in Villa Zonneschijn. The Beet Harvest marks the transition between social naturalism and light research. Through contact with Monet and French impressionism, Claus clarified his palette without renouncing Flemish rural life. In 1904, he founded the Life and Light circle and became the central figure of Belgian luminism, nicknamed the "painter of the sun". Taking refuge in London during the First World War, he transposed his research to mists of the Thames before returning to Astene. The "Émile Claus" selection offers its own route on this subject. Its reading favors atmosphere.
In Claus, the sun does not simply illuminate the landscape: it passes through water, work and color until it becomes the real subject.
