Originally from the diocese of Laon in Picardy, Enguerrand Quarton was documented in Provence between 1444 and 1466, first in Aix then in Avignon. In this region open to exchanges between France, Flanders, Italy and the Mediterranean, he developed a style of great singularity. The meticulous detail of the faces and fabrics evokes the Flemish masters, while the monumental order, the clear light and the ideal architecture structure the image with almost abstract power. Preserved contracts make it possible to identify with certainty the Coronation of the Virgin, commissioned in 1453, and the Virgin of Mercy of the Cadard family, created with Pierre Villate. The famous Pietà de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, today at the Louvre, is attributed to him: the bare background, the extended body of Christ and the silent pain of the figures make it one of the most intense images of 15th century French painting. Quarton also works for altarpieces and probably for illuminated manuscripts. His preserved corpus remains rare, but each work testifies to an exceptional synthesis between devotion, observation and construction. The "Enguerrand Quarton" selection notably compares Pietà de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Coronation of the Virgin. His reading favors space.
Quarton unites the detail of reality with an almost celestial order: each face is individual, but the entire composition tends towards eternity.
