Trained in Valencia then in Malaga with Bernardo Ferrandiz, Simonet traveled to Italy and the Mediterranean thanks to a boarding house in Rome. The Autopsy, painted in 1890, shows a doctor examining the heart of a dead young woman; long distributed under the apocryphal title "And she had a heart", the work confronts scientific knowledge, the female body and the social gaze. Two years later, Flevit super illam represents Christ weeping over Jerusalem in a carefully studied Palestinian light.
