Born in Amsterdam around 1587, Esaias van de Velde belongs to a family of Flemish artists based in the United Provinces. Trained in the mannerist environment of the landscape, he quickly broke away from it to observe with new frankness the countryside, waterways and horizons of Holland. Installed in Haarlem in the early 1610s, he frequented a decisive home where Willem Buytewech and Hercules Seghers worked in particular. His paintings reduce the panoramic artifices inherited from the 16th century: the horizon descends, the shots follow one another naturally, the light unifies the space and ordinary figures give scale. Dunes, roads, villages, military scenes and rivers thus become the subjects of a modern national painting. From 1618, Van de Velde worked in The Hague for the court of Maurice de Nassau and Frédéric-Henri. He taught Jan van Goyen and profoundly influenced Salomon van Ruysdael, Pieter de Molijn and the entire generation of tonal landscape.
