Eugène Grasset was born in Lausanne in 1845. Trained in architecture in Zurich, he traveled to Egypt then settled in Paris in 1871. Rather than limiting himself to painting, he developed a global conception of decorative art: illustration, poster, typography, furniture, tapestry, mosaic, jewelry and stained glass must meet the same principles of unity, rhythm and adaptation to use. His illustrations for the History of the Four Aymon Sons, published in 1883, combine medieval inspiration, flat colors and ornamental frames. In posters and calendars, the female figure, the firm outline and the stylized plants fully announce Art Nouveau. Grasset collaborates with artisans and industrialists, notably the master glassmaker Félix Gaudin. For the competition for the stained glass windows of Orléans Cathedral in 1893, he designed a suite dedicated to Joan of Arc whose boxes, although not retained, are admired for their monumental clarity. The series Les Mois de 1896 translates each season by a figure, a plant and a colorful harmony.
