Tunis -Buenos Aires, 1864 -1927 · History, battle and academic realism
Eugenio Alvarez Dumont was born in Tunis in 1864 and died in Buenos Aires in 1927. Elder brother of César Alvarez Dumont, he studied at the School of San Fernando, then at the Spanish Academy and the Chigi Academy in Rome. He then specialized in historical and military scenes, from the Madrid insurrection of 1808 to the death of Churruca in Trafalgar. The Death of Adonis constitutes his first regulatory sending as a boarder to Rome. Painted in 1889 on a canvas of 139 × 236 cm, it was inspired by Book X of Ovid's Metamorphoses: mortally wounded by the wild boar he was chasing, the young hero collapsed near his dog. The body in shortcut meets the academic expectations of the study of male nude, but the landscape, painted with free touches and a lively freshness, introduces modern realism. The work obtained an honorary qualification in San Fernando in 1890. The selection "Eugenio Alvarez Dumont" notably compares The Death of Adonis. His reading favors figures.
Mythology provides the ideal body; nature painted on the spot restores its weight, cold and mortality.
