1574 -1634 · Italy, court of Madrid and spiritual sweetness
Born in Madrid in 1574, Eugenio Cajés is the son of Patricio Cajés, an Italian painter who came to Spain in 1567 to work at the Escorial. He learned in his father's studio, then stayed in Rome between 1595 and 1599. This double origin explains a way which links Italian drawing, delicate chords and Madrid court culture. Back in Spain, Eugenio collaborated with his father on the fresco decorations of the Pardo Palace between 1608 and 1610. In 1612, he became painter to the king, a position which ensured him religious and official commissions while placing him, with Vicente Carducho, at the forefront of Madrid painting from the first third of the 17th century. His sacred compositions favor flexible gestures, collected faces and a light that orders without brutality. The Assumption of the Virgin verticalizes the climb between earth and sky; The Adoration of the Magi organizes the approach of bodies and gifts; the Virgin and Child with angels transforms devotion into musical intimacy. Saint Ildefonso receiving the chasuble combines Marian miracle and Toledo tradition. Cajés also knows perfectly the mythology of the royal collections. Cupid, Leda and Ganymede derive from Italian models, notably Correggio and Parmigianino, and show the value given to copying as the transmission of a masterpiece. Finally, The Reconquest of San Juan de Puerto Rico belongs to the program of the Salon des Royales du Buen Retiro: religious painting then meets the military memory of the monarchy. Died in 1634, Cajés leaves a production where Italian influence is never a simple imitation, but adaptation to multiple Spanish uses. The "Eugenio Cajés" selection notably compares The Assumption of the Virgin and The Adoration of the Magi. Its reading favors details.
Cajés circulates the same grace between the Virgin, the angels, the ancient gods and the soldiers: Italy becomes a Madrid language.
