Fanny Churberg was born in Vaasa in 1845 in the Grand Duchy of Finland. A young orphan, she affirmed her desire to become an artist very early on. The academies remaining largely closed to women, she took private lessons in Helsinki with Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin, Emma Gyldén and Berndt Lindholm, then left to study in Düsseldorf in the 1870s. There she discovered a very constructed landscape tradition but refused to smooth out its effects. Churberg traveled the countryside, painted studies on the motif and researched the most intense states of nature: storm, snow, sunset, dark water, wind and heavy sky.
