Fanny Churberg was born in Vaasa in 1845 in the Grand Duchy of Finland. A young orphan, she affirmed her desire to become an artist very early on. The academies remaining largely closed to women, she took private lessons in Helsinki with Alexandra Frosterus-Såltin, Emma Gyldén and Berndt Lindholm, then left to study in Düsseldorf in the 1870s.
