Fede Galizia was born in Milan around 1578. His father, Nunzio Galizia, was a miniaturist and costume designer; he transmitted to her very early on a precise technique, a taste for fabrics and attention to precious details. Still a teenager, Fede is already cited as an accomplished artist. She paints portraits, religious subjects and biblical heroines for a cultured Milanese clientele. Her figures often stand out against a dark background, with sharp contours, smooth modeling and jewelry described almost as independent objects. Judith with the head of Holofernes is one of her favorite subjects, known in several versions. Judith with the head of Holofernes is one of her favorite subjects, known in several versions. Judith with the head of Holofernes is one of her favorite subjects, known in several versions. Jud calm, her sumptuous costume and the concrete presence of the severed head create a tension between beauty, virtue and violence. Galizia also plays a major role in the birth of autonomous still life in Italy. From the beginning of the 17th century, she organized fruits, flowers and containers on a table or tablet, in front of a dark background. The composition remains deliberately simple, but the light reveals peach skin, reflection of a glass, leaf or drop of water with an almost monumental intensity. This realistic concentration influences the Lombard tradition, notably Panfilo Nuvolone. Active until the 1620s, Galizia probably died in Milan around 1630, perhaps during the plague epidemic. His work illustrates the decisive place of women in the rise of European still life. The "Fede Galizia" selection notably compares Judith with the head of Holofernes. His reading favors composition.
Galizia concentrates the drama in precision: pearl, blade, fruit or gaze become as present as the biblical story which brings them together.
