1505 -1553 · Wittenberg, voters of Saxony and court workshop
Lucas Cranach the Elder gives the voters of Saxony a lasting image: portrait, hunting and workshop rehearsal transform the prince into a political presence visible throughout the territory.
Lucas Cranach the Elder was born in Kronach in 1472 and died in Weimar in 1553. After a decisive stay in Vienna, in 1505 he was appointed court painter to the voters of Saxony in Wittenberg. He successively served Frederick III the Wise, John the Constant and John Frederick I the Magnanimous. This function goes far beyond individual portraiture. Cranach designs images capable of affirming dynastic continuity, commemorating a reign and circulating as political instruments. Frederick the Wise, protector of the University of Wittenberg and Martin Luther, was one of his first great patrons. The workshop designed images capable of affirming dynastic continuity, commemorating a reign and circulating as political instruments. Frederick the Wise, protector of the University of Wittenberg and Martin Luther, was one of its first great patrons. The workshop produced his effigy in several forms, before and after his death in 1525. In 1533, one commissioning sixty pairs of portraits of Frederick and John the Constant demonstrates the speed and organization of the workshop. Jean-Frédéric the Magnanimous uses these series to legitimize his own succession. The portraits selected in this collection show the prince in bust, with dark costume, fur, headgear and direct or side gaze. Frederick the Wise's Deer Hunt with Emperor Maximilian I broadens the dynastic language: landscape, dogs, horsemen and game celebrate the court, memory and rank. Around Cranach, assistants and sons allow you to multiply the versions without losing the lively design, the bold colors and the silhouette immediately recognizable. These images also accompany the Reformation, alliances and conflicts of the House of Saxony. They show how a Renaissance workshop creates a coherent political identity on a large scale. The selection "Frederick of Saxony by Lucas Cranach the Elder" notably compares Deer Hunting with Maximilian I and John Frederick I the Magnanimous. His reading favors figures.
In Cranach's workshop, the princely portrait is never an isolated image: it belongs to a strategy of memory, succession and territorial presence.
